From Pain to Potential: Reversing the Effects of Persistent and Chronic Pain Conditions

in Singapore
Contact: Whole Perseon Centre PTE, Ltd.
Phone/Fax: 67744863
Email: Lucy Heng wpclucy@singnet.com.sg

During these two days, we will study various types of pain, learn a 10 point protocol for treating these disorders, and explore various issues that relate to systemic as well as localized pain. Specific treatment areas include fibromyalgia, headaches, post-surgical pain, neuropathies, and arthritis, lupus and other autoimmune dysfunction. We will also examine extreme emotional pain states such as grief, rage, panic, and shame.

Presentations will examine how to reverse the course of pain conditions, which is possible through work with the polyvagal nervous system. You will learn techniques that address emotional and physical pain from the "bottom up," gradually re-setting the nervous system which makes it possible to reverse the effects of trauma and pain rather than simply managing or reducing pain. Methods will be drawn from hypnosis, mindfulness, imagery, Energy Psychology, and Somatic Experiencing® models. Participants are invited to bring patients for live demonstration and to discuss their most challenging clinical cases for consultation.

Somatic Experiencing® (SE) offers a hopeful, naturalistic perspective on trauma. It views the human animal as a unique being, endowed with an instinctual capacity to heal, as well as the intellectual spirit to harness innate healing abilities.

This first workshop teaches the essential somatic building blocks to help release the long-term and acute effects of traumatic stress in order to create permanent, positive change from the body level up. Topics include the physiology of threat, healthy autonomic response, the dynamics of self-regulation, the roles of the triune brain and the polyvagal nervous system in both activating and deactivating reactions to trauma.

Participants will view and discuss several video demonstrations of the work of Peter Levine during both workshops. In this workshop, there will also be live demonstrations to illustrate various SE skills such as:
• How to work with sensation, the language of the reptilian brain;
• Identify, normalize, and stabilize traumatic reactions
• Specific ways to titrate and integrate trauma activation in the body;
• The TRIPODS and ROSE models of tracking and assisting clients through the somatic healing process.

In addition, attendees will have the opportunity to practice and refine the following skills:  Tracking one’s own as well as client sensations, managing one’s own as well as clients’ trauma-related activation, facilitating somatic integration through work with pendulum rhythms, and ways of helping with the titration or deactivation of various trauma responses

This workshop presents additional Somatic Experiencing® building blocks, with a special focus on understanding and facilitating resources of empowerment, mastery, and expansion of choice and resiliency.  Participants will learn specific ways to facilitate movement through time for problems that have been “frozen” due to various types of trauma; methods of containing and managing flooding and over-activation of post-traumatic symptoms; and how to help clients restore gentle cycles of sympathetic and parasympathetic interplay using various types of language patterns.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to practice and refine the following specific skills:
• Identifying resources,
• Effective use of invitational and body-based language
• Recognition of patterns of constriction, activation, discharge, and integration,
• Coupling and dissociative dynamics.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own cases for consultation and to participate in case discussion. As time permits, we will also work with "live" clients to illustrate Somatic Experiencing® methods.
